Read: Luke 24:13-35
This passage may be one of the greatest examples of dramatic irony in all of scripture. Here we have two disciples that are lamenting the torture and death of Jesus, but are also witnesses to the hope of Jesus’ resurrection… and they are telling all of this to Jesus without even knowing it is him. As we embark on this year-long journey through the Bible, we can learn from these two disciples on the road to Emmaus. We don’t want to miss Jesus like they missed Jesus.
They were so engrossed in the moment and focused on the current situation that they missed the point: that all of scripture has been pointing to the life, passion, death, and resurrection of the Christ who was walking with them. The hope for this study is that we begin to be able to see Jesus throughout all of scripture and become more aware of Jesus walking with us in our everyday lives. We can learn about Jesus, who he is, the rhythms he has, and how he interacts with us by first looking in scripture. Just as Jesus explained to those two disciples on that long walk, the entirety of scripture through the continual rhythm of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration ultimately culminates in the person of Jesus.
As we seek to know and make known nothing except for Jesus Christ, we are not simply confined to the New Testament. We can witness the good news of the gospel throughout all of scripture as we study the salvation history of the people of God; and so, we will learn and be better equipped to participate in the creation of salvation history as the people of God.
Pray
Jesus, Author of salvation, may we approach the scriptures with an open heart, mind, and soul in order that the real you may be revealed to us and not a version that the world wants us to see. Remove our blindness to your activity through the scriptures and in our everyday life. We want to know you more, proclaim you more, and participate in bringing to fruition your prayer, that it would be in our neighborhoods as it is in heaven.
